As a psychiatric mental health Nurse Practitioner, I work with people ages 6 years and older, helping my patients to manage their medications and referring them to therapists. Kumba Kanu is a Adult/Gerontology board certified Nurse Practitioner. She has practiced in her current role for 9 years in various settings in primary care including clinic, house call, assisted living, skilled nursing facility, and as faculty in a medical residency clinic. She specializes in managing complex medical and psychosocial needs of adult and geriatric patients while focusing on illness prevention, health promotion, maintaining function and independence. Prior to starting her practice as a nurse practitioner, Kumba worked as a Registered Nurse in an acute care hospital in St Paul, MN for 11 years performing direct patient care, education and counseling. Dr. Bisi Burks is a doctoral-prepared, licensed advanced practice nurse. She specializes in psychiatric mental health and is certified by the American Nurse Credentialing Center and the Minnesota Board of Nursing. With over a decade of experience in behavioral and mental health, she is committed to providing compassionate, evidence-based care. She earned her Doctoral degree in nursing at the University of Minnesota—Twin Cities, her Bachelor of Science in Public Health Nursing at the University of Wisconsin, and her Associate of Science in Nursing at North Hennepin Community College. Her areas of expertise include comprehensive behavioral assessments across all ages and groups. Treatment planning includes medication and therapy, crisis intervention, medication management, therapeutic services, individual, group, and family therapy, patient and family education, care coordination, and evidence-based practice, integrating the latest research into patient care. Outside of her professional work, Dr. Burks enjoys spending quality time with her family and staying engaged in her community.
